Propagation modelling is key for wireless operators to plan and optimise radio access network as it allows simulating pathloss, coverage and interference of a network configuration modelled by the radio planning and optimisation tool. The new 5G NR radio technology also requires propagation modelling in new mmWave frequency bands.
Sophisticated propagation models can provide an accurate prediction of various propagation conditions and frequencies, and accuracy can be enhanced by calibration using CW measurements, drive-test data and mobile traces. Ray-tracing propagation models provide more accurate results in urban conditions and allow a better modelling of LTE and 5G NR small cells.
In order to accurately model propagation in the 5G NR mmWave frequency bands (e.g 28GHz), propagation models need to consider vegetation and atmospheric losses as they have more impact than in lower frequencies (e.g sub 6GHz).
Atoll radio planning and optimisation software includes a comprehensive catalogue of integrated propagation models. Atoll’s propagation model library includes empirical, statistical, deterministic, ray-tracing, as well as advanced universal propagation models that support modelling of all frequency bands, including the 5G NR mmWave frequency bands.
Propagation models can be tuned and calibrated within Atoll using CW measurements and drive test data.
